The idea that form is mechanically-or structurally-constructed through relationships between space, light, material, and perception.
Forma Mechanica is the exploration of constructed presence-the belief that a human presence need not be depicted, but can emerge through the mechanics of space, light, material, and perception.
It explores what it means for a human presence to be constructed rather than simply represented.
The work does not begin with the figure,
…it begins with space.
Forma Mechanica.
My Philosophy
I am not interested in painting a figure in space. I am interested in constructing a presence that briefly becomes a figure.
Simple question
How little is required before we recognize another human presence?
Complex answer
Rather than presenting a portrait, the work constructs an environment in which a figure briefly comes into being.
The portrait is not the subject.
Presence is.
